Plywood is a laminated wood panel built up of several vaneers (thin wood sheets), bonded together with the grain of each sheet crossed at an angle to the one above or below it.At present there are two distinct plywood industries in the United States; namely, hardwood and softwood. The hardwood plywood industry utilizes hard woods such as mahogany, birch, maple and gum; it is concentrated in the area east of the Mississippi River. The softwood plywood industry, with which this report is concerned, utilizes soft woods such as Douglas fir, pine and spruce; the industry is centered in the Pacific Northwest.
