This paper is designed as a survey of public opinion from March 5, 1917, to April 4, 1917. The two dates are significant in American history. The former was the day twelve men in the Senate managed to defeat the President's Armed Ship Bill. The latter date concerns the vote on America's entry into World War I. In determining the public reaction to these votes. I have chosen to limit my research to just the six Senators involved in both dissenting votes. As the paper undoubtedly and sometimes rather graphically illustrates, the votes of the six Senators were received by the country and their constituents, as revealed in the newspapers and magazines of the day, with amazement and disgust. Little support for their action was expressed.
