Constantin Caratheodory: 1873--1950
The motion picture is a powerful tool that can educate and inspire. In the mathematical sciences, the motion picture can bring to life the life, times, and work of a mathematician and the excitement of discovery. We see this in the success of motion pictures such as A Beautiful Mind, Pi, and Good Will Hunting, television programming such as PBS's Nova, and documentaries such as The Proof. These movies present mathematics and mathematicians in an interesting and exciting manner. A student's classroom experience is broadened when well-produced educational television programming is incorporated into the mathematics curriculum. The film, Constantin Caratheodory: 1873--1950, is a 30-minute documentary on the life and times of the mathematician Constantin Caratheodory. It discusses his contributions to mathematics and explores several of those contributions in-depth. Through the use of archival photographs and footage, interviews, live action, recreations, and graphics Constantin Caratheodory's life and work emerges. The documentary will focus primarily on his years of mathematical work but briefly discuss his early years and family background.
