Little analytical record has existed of the historical development of Arena Stage graphic design in relationship to its theatrical evolution. This paper establishes such a record and shows how the development of visual communications has functioned throughout the years as a tool for promoting the theatre. Arena Stage, founded in 1950, is one of the oldest continuing resident theatres in the United States and thus has extensive archives of printed pieces. Through research into these archives and into other relevant printed materials, along with interviews of key personnel, the author shows how Arena's printed image has evolved into an image consistent with the level of theatrical production.
