Collaborations in the visual arts and dance in the twentieth century: A meeting of the minds

An understanding of selected seminal collaborative efforts between visual artists and choreographers in the twentieth century may illuminate and clarify the importance of such joint projects in the history of performance. This thesis will examine the origin of major collaborations in the twentieth century and how past collaborations have lead to future collaborations. The study begins with the artistic interaction of painter Emile Nolde and dance pioneer Mary Wigman working in the period of 1910-1919 and concludes with the investigation of Astral Converted (50"), created in 1991 through the joint efforts of Trisha Brown and Robert Rauschenberg. The thesis may provide arts managers with an analysis of the collaborative process and provide insight into how artists work together and why this joint working process has been increasingly important in the last twenty years.
