As the ship Panther anchored at Saint Johns, Newfoundland, in the year 1771, a young naval officer, anxious to be off to his new station, awaited orders from the Commander-in-Chief of His Majesty's Ships and Vessels stationed about the Island of Newfoundland. Thomas Tingey, the new officer, has recently arrived from England in the North Atlantic region and having not yet reached his twenty-first birthday was undoubtedly imbued with the courage, spirit and restlessness of youth.
