From 1912, when New Mexico became a state, until his death in 1935, Bronson M. Cutting was a figure of importance in New Mexican politics. It is impossible to study the Progressive movement in that state without recognizing his leadership in that field. It is equally impossible to deal with the Republican Party -- which he sometimes opposed, sometimes tried to reform, finally joined, and for a period dominated -- without a knowledge of Bronson Cutting's activities. Even the Democratic Party in the early nineteen-twenties owed something to his influence.
