Analysis of pictorial planarity

Planarity is an explicity term for a specific concept of the old space problem in pictorial realization. It has become a needful and highly specialized space concept with ramifications and technical possibilities not previously given such vast aesthetic notice nore conscious concern. It is our multifarious comprehension of the universe today that makes this terminology vital and valid. This is not to say that planes are an innovation in any way. The ancient painter of tomb walls along the Nile used them consciously and expertly as did the artists through all the ages of art history. A plane is something that is committed the moment one lays brush or pigment to wall. An advancing or recessional experience is set up. The inter-relationships of implied motions define the depth inward and outward, upward and downward. Whether it be by line, recessional motion, chromatic handling or plastic statement, the problem is an immediate and elemental one of rendering limited or unlimited pictorial distance. By analysis of pictorial planarity, the author means a closer look at what has happened to this expanded contemporary concern for the picture plane. How this is achieved shall comprise this thesis, along with accompanying paintings as visual elucidation.
