An application of conflict resolution theory to peaceful unification in the Korean Peninsula

This research applies conflict resolution theory to the Korean conflict and suggests mechanisms for achieving the goal of peaceful unification in the Korean Peninsula which are more feasible than the current power politics approach. This research examines the applicability of three significant conflict resolution methods---direct negotiation, mediation, and Multi-Track diplomacy---and explains the complementary relations among them in order to provide a constructive pathway for the unification of Korea. Past military buildup and superficial dialogue reveals that both Korean regimes have tried to achieve their own 'peace'---maintaining status quo---through power; however, there has not been any serious progress for national unification. Therefore, both Koreas should consider the importance and necessity of utilizing conflict resolution methods to resolve the conflict in the Korean peninsula.
