An analysis of cross-training and its potential benefit to the dancer's physical condition and performance

The question raised by this thesis is whether cross-training can play a supportive role in a dancer's training program. According to the completed study, a dancer can potentially enhance his/her physical capabilities by participating in muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance training in addition to dance technique classes and rehearsals. The study encompasses the four components of proper physical conditioning: flexibility, muscle strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and neuro-muscular coordination. It concludes that several of these areas are missing from a dancer's training program. Ways in which cross-training can benefit the dancer are then explored. An analytical study was undertaken involving several university dance students by which conclusions are drawn supporting the thesis hypothesis. The students were supervised in weight-training and aerobic activities in addition to their dance technique classes and rehearsals. The dancers improved their physical capabilities, increased their strength and cardiovascular endurance, and felt stronger overall.
