Responsibility for the guidance and development of the mentally handicapped child is generally shared by the home and the school. Parent-teacher conferences should be one of the most direct and effective means of building a foundation of understanding and cooperation in discharging this dual obligation to the youngster who does not measure up to a regular school program. However, little can be accomplished and maintained for the child unless the teacher knows how to establish a favorable working relationship with the parent.
