This study describes an attempt to determine the relationship between personal insight and social insight in an experimental manner. Like most problems and concepts in psychology which are subjected to contemporary methods of investigation, this problem has historical antecedents in early contemporary scientific psychology as well saw in prescientific psychology. It is an historical truism that psychology and philosophy were inextricably mingled in the early evolution of contemporary thought; it might therefore pay us to go back to the beginnings of modern psychology for a few fleeting glimpses of some of the antecedents of our central concepts.
