The following account of the more striking and important features of the social and political conditions which played an influential part in forming the national character of the United States from 1880 to 1929 has been gathered from the writings of English travelers who visited America during that period. The present study attempts to supplement the two most admirable works, Miss Janet Mesick's "The English Traveller in America: 1785-1835", and Mr. Spencer Harris Reed's "British Travelers in the United States: 1835-1970".
