Agricultural development and rural life in Haiti, 1934-1953
In view of the present-day interest of the United Nations and the United States in the development of the so-called "backward" countries, and the desire of the Haitian government to take advantage of the technical assistance programs sponsored by the United Nations and the United States, it is necessary to explore and evaluate the course of recent Haitian agricultural history. Knowledge of the past record will act as a guide in charting the course of future agricultural policy in Haiti. This study is intended to serve as such a guide. The objective of this study is to analyze the agrarian aspects of the economic development of Haiti during the period 1934 to 1953, to determine the trends in agricultural development and the manner in which agricultural conditions have contributed to, and imposed limitations upon the solution of, the nation's social and economic problems.
