The aim of this thesis is to ascertain the relationship between business and religion in the United States in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. For the most part it is limited in time to the period from the end of the Civil War to the beginning of the depression in 1929. It is hoped that the particular contribution of the thesis may be to determine from the writings of business men and preachers what attractions religion held for American businessmen, what business had to offer American religion, and in what manner the exchange of services was made and received.
