The purpose of this thesis is two-fold. First, it is to show that in the analysis of problems of long-term unemployment at least two concepts are useful: one, the long-term unemployment rate; and two, the percent ratio of long-term unemployment to total unemployment. Second, it is to show that by these two measures, a more comprehensive identification and description of the forces operating on long-term unemployment within certain descriptive categories from 1954-1961 can be made.
