The aim of this thesis is to design a multi-tiered architecture for a local wireless network for providing indoor services in a hospital emergency department. The proposed architecture has two main features: (i) allows location tracking of patients and medical staff, and (ii) facilitates access to and browsing of vital patient information by medical staff. The purpose of the first feature (location tracking) is to coordinate activities of medical personnel to ensure that patients receive timely medical care which is very crucial in any emergency department. The coordination of medical staff activities also plays a major role in rendering a high quality service. In the proposed architecture such coordination is provided by a central administrative office which continuously monitors the present locations of all patients and medical staff. The purpose of the second feature (patient information accessing) is to allow the medical personnel browse the relevant information about patients from anywhere in the premises, at anytime.
