A Spectacular Mess is a poetry collection written from the point of view of a singular speaker. Divided into three parts, the work explores themes of love, time, place, and the concept of home. Thematic content is reflected in the experimentation of free verse and formal poetry. The title is taken from the poem "Girl" and references the speaker's desire to untangle the messy yarns of early life and adult experiences. Written at the end of the first act of the speaker's life, A Spectacular Mess seeks to clean up the speaker's understanding of life as she knows it through the steady progression of creative work.
