The two essential qualities in any work of art, it seems to me, are form and content; that is, the formal or structural element and the expressive element. When the former characteristic, which has been termed at different periods "composition" or "plastic orchestration", is dominant, it results in the classic approach; when the latter is extremely pronounced, it produces expressionistic art. The problem which confronts anyone engaged in the plastic arts is that of working out a satisfactory relationship between the two.
