Industry in the United States has been losing its competitive edge to world markets. While many experts believe that this country has lost its production lead, they feel the country still has the edge in innovation and technology. The question remains--with our current methods of management, can industry hold or improve this position?; This research explores the major role of communication in a large hierarchal firm, to determine what influence this information process has on productivity and employee attitudes. The study employed interviews with individuals on all levels, documentary and literature reviews, group questionnaire on the operating level, and the internal inspection by the author. Communication in the large hierarchal company has decreased the productivity and increased employee alienation. There is a reduction in speed, control, understanding, quantity of information, access in upward and laterally directed inquiries, quality and clarity of directives, and the amount of information feedback.
