The study of arithmetic is one of the three fundamental aspects of general learning. The author, as a teacher of mathematics in high school, has had occasion to note basic deficiencies in arithmetic groundwork and therefore set herself the task of investigating twenty-one cases of mathematical deficiency. One of these has been discarded because of lack of cooperation on the part of the student, who is apparently a borderline case. The remaining twenty students submitted themselves to required diagnostic procedure and their results are shown in the thesis. These were all boys and were assigned the author as deficients to do what she could with them.
