On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court of the United States issued opinions on cases having to do with segregation in the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.) and in various states, including Virginia. These opinions declared that,"... segregation is a denial of the equal protection of the laws".and that,"We conclude that in the field of public education the doctrine of 'separate but equal' has no place."Certain aspects of the cases for which these opinions were given were restored to the docket for further argument in later sessions.
