A NEMESIS ON NEGRO MOUNTAIN

thesis
posted on 2023-08-04, 09:40 authored by Ricardo Kimbers, Jr.

A Nemesis on Negro Mountain takes place in 1999 in the panhandle of western Maryland. This work of fiction follows the perspective of Jay, a thirteen-year-old boy who is forcibly moved from his home in Baltimore to the fictional Crossland County, Maryland by his mother Tamika, in attempt to be closer to her daughter attending a local college, provide a new environment for her son, and ultimately protest and petition the name of Negro Mountain. This coming-of-age story manuscript will delve into the themes of America’s original sin, identity/blackness, extremism, the impending doom of Y2K, and generational rage. Jay will struggle with doubt, faith, the competing fictions that the world offers, and the deaths of his father Jamar and cousin Ronnie. When fully realized, this manuscript will include a parallel narrative taking place in 1750 following Nemesis, a black frontiersman and real-life historical/folklore figure – the namesake for Negro Mountain itself.
