On April 26, 1847, a group of thirty-five Carman-Lutheran pastors and laymen from varied sections of the midwest met in Chicago, Illinois, to organize a new synod, the Deutache Evangelicishe Synode von Missouri, Ohio und andern Staaten. They represented the conservative element of German-American Lutheranism, often referred to as the "Old Lutherans" or "Saxon Lutherans.".
