A Figure Painting in Tempera Emulsion
This painting and paper have presented many challenges to me and I feel that in working them out I have learned a considerable amount. Many colleges and universities still abide by the old rules that in order for a painter to obtain a graduate degree he must spend hundreds of hours away from his painting rewriting what others have written about art history, I heartily endorse the new painting thesis program of American University and hope that this system will be continued. The greatest source material for this work was found in galleries rather than books. The original paintings in the National Gallery, the Phillips Collection, and the Corcoran Gallery were of great service to me. I wish to express my appreciation to Miss Sarah Baker, Mr. Robert F. Gates, and Mr. Ben L. Summerford for their interest in my development as a creative painter, and for their assistance with this project.
