A Defense of the Thesis Painting, "The White Shelf"

In defending the thesis painting, "The White Shelf", I will confine myself to three major points: the general philosophic attitude that has lead to the use of the object as an abstract form; the mechanical construction of the painting, evolved not through specific rules of contraction but through the act of adjustments of relationships arising in the visual process and its pictorial expression; and the use of color as an organic form- and space-making element, Of the three points, the first, that of the philosophic or esthetic idea, is the most important for it gives character to the representation.
