The problem of relating a figure or series of figures to a landscape in which the scale of the human figure is secondary to that of his natural surroundings is not a new one in the history of painting. While history tells us that the Mediterranean painter has always been more inclined to portray the human as master of his sector of the universe, the peoples of northern Europe have tended to represent man in a more subordinate role.
