A Catalogue of the Keyboard Sonatas of Baldassare Galuppi (1706-1785)

The keyboard sonatas of Baldassare Galuppi survive in various primary and secondary sources with differing numbers and combinations of movements in differing versions, tempi, and keys. Because of the difficulty in grouping the movements into sonatas, a thematic index arranging the individual movements systematically by key is provided. A second thematic index attempts to group the movements into sonatas according to the fullest form appearing in the primary sources following existing published thematic indexes by Torrefranca, Van den Barren, and Raabe, who collectively list 51 sonatas. Additional groupings combining Illy's published index of 103 sonatas and an unpublished index by Woodcock bring the total number of sonatas to 123. The author discusses the provenance of the sonata movements and provides a brief analysis of 45 representative sonatas.
