In this paper, successful approaches to teaching introductory physics students using strategies developed from a comprehensive learning style model will be discussed. Particular emphasis will be placed on the role of writing as a teaching and learning tool. The particular learning style model to be described is the Dunn and Dunn Learning Style Model. The basic elements of this learning style model will be highlighted. This model is currently being employed with non-science majors enrolled in introductory physics at American University. Two teaching approaches designed to accommodate students' learning style preferences will be shared. These approaches involve the use of student writing through folder activities and on-line discussions Ideas and approaches used to enhance student motivation and interest will also be shared. These approaches could easily be adapted for use by educators in other branches of science, as well as mathematics, engineering, and technology (SMET) education.
