Threading the Needle: How Jordan Seeks Out Stability in an Unstable Region

<p dir="ltr">Jordan has emerged as a rare stabilizing force in a region marked by wars, coups, and political unrest. Since its independence in 1946, the kingdom has managed a delicate balance between domestic pressures (particularly the presence of millions of Palestinian refugees) and external challenges from powerful neighbors. Its strategy rests on three pillars: maintaining internal cohesion through cautious policies on Israel and Palestine, acting as a mediator in regional conflicts, and forging strong alliances with the United States, Gulf monarchies, and other global powers. Despite its relatively small size, Jordan’s capable military and credibility as a neutral actor have shielded it from destabilization. Given its record of counterterrorism cooperation, peacemaking efforts, and steady diplomacy, strengthening U.S. support for Jordan through defense agreements, economic aid, and diplomatic backing is considered crucial to sustaining regional stability.</p>
